Swim into Summarization (with dolphins!)

Reading to Learn

Swim into Summarization (with dolphins!)

Rationale: The goal when reading is comprehension. Once beginning readers have mastered decoding and have gained a large sight vocabulary, they are ready to take on the challenge of comprehension. A big part of comprehension is summarization. This means understanding and being able to acknowledge the main parts of whatever they have to read. We can test a student’s comprehension skill by asking them to summarize something they read. In this lesson, students will be taking note of most important information and writing a 2-sentence summary on the passage they read. The teacher will give tips and helpful strategies before to make sure the students are fully prepared.

Materials:

1. Paper for each student

2. Pencils for each student

3. Copy of Bottlenose Dolphin by National Geographic Kids for each student

4. Highlighters for each student

5. Dry erase board and markers for tips

6. Assessment checklist

7. Comprehension quiz

Procedures:

1. Say: Has anyone ever read something they thought was interesting and told a friend about it? (class responds) I know I have! When you do this, do you usually tell your friend every detail of the book, or just the important parts? (class responds) Correct, we just tell them the important parts! This is called summarization! Summarization is when you just take all the important information from the passage, to make a quick understand of what you read!

2. Let’s go over some tips to make you guys experts at summarizing! (Write these on the board)

1. Read the passage all the way through

2. Read it carefully

3. Identify the main ideas

4. Highlight the important parts

5. Write the main idea in one or two sentences

3. Let’s practice with an example!

4. Let’s practice! We are going to read a passage about a Bottlenose Dolphin! (booktalk: how many of you have been to the beach? Have you ever seen a dolphin?) This dolphin is thought to be one of the smartest animals on earth! I’m going to read the passage aloud while you follow, and we can learn what makes dolphins so smart! As we read, I want everyone to highlight the important parts, think of this as the parts you would tell your friends about if you only had a little bit of time to tell them about it. Once we are done reading, we will make a summary that is a sentence or two about the passage.

5. (read the passage out loud to the class. As you read, point out the important and unimportant details.) Say: “Bottlenose dolphins have a sharp sense of hearing. Scientists believe that the sounds travel through the dolphin's lower jaw to its inner ear and then are transmitted to the brain for analysis. Does anyone have any questions about what any of those words mean?” (wait for reply and assist if needed)

6. Say: That book had some important information! Let’s continue to practice by summarizing our passage. Spend some time thinking about what you think the main points are and write down. Then write a sentence or two summarizing. When everyone is finished people can volunteer to share their summaries.

7. (while everyone is working, walk around and assess everyone’s work. Assist when needed.)

8. Say: Okay now that we are all finished, who wants to volunteer to read their summary. (wait for volunteers. Highlight the positives and encourage their good work.)

9. Collect everyone’s summary and use the assessment sheet to assess if the kids understand summarization.

Assessment checklist:

Collect everyone’s summaries and evaluate their learning based on the following things:

____ the information highlighted was actually important

____ Summary was only 1-2 sentences

____ Summary used complete sentences

____ Summary correctly highlighted the passage

Comprehension quiz:

1. How high can dolphins leap?

2. Is a dolphin a mammal?

3. Are dolphins social?

4. What do dolphins eat?

5. What body of water do dolphins live in?
